The last stretch into Madikeri climbs through ghat roads that reward an experienced highway driver over a self-drive rental, especially after dark or during monsoon season when visibility drops. Because most Coorg trips run 2-3 days rather than a single day out, we build in flexibility for detours to individual homestays and estate resorts that aren't always well signposted. An SUV or MUV handles the hill roads and estate driveways more comfortably than a sedan, though we run both depending on group size.
