ABOUT THIS ROUTE

Travelling to Pondicherry (Puducherry)

Pondicherry (Puducherry) draws Bangalore travellers for a weekend that feels genuinely different from the city — cobbled French Quarter streets, beachfront cafes, and a slower pace than the Karnataka hill routes. The drive runs east via Krishnagiri and Tiruvannamalai or the Hosur-Vellore corridor, roughly 310 km and 6.5 hours depending on which route your driver takes around Chennai's outer traffic. Because much of the French Quarter is best explored on foot, most groups use the cab mainly for the highway legs and a couple of local runs to Auroville or Paradise Beach rather than continuous city driving. An executive sedan works well for this route given the flatter terrain compared to the hill-station trips, though we run SUVs for larger groups just as readily.

HIGHLIGHTS ALONG THE WAY

Promenade Beach and the French Quarter's colonial villas
Auroville and the Matrimandir, a short drive from the city
Paradise Beach, reached by a short boat crossing
Sri Aurobindo Ashram in the heart of the old town
